I.P. Ryan Excelsior Variant

Circa 1855 Horizontal "John Ryan" - a Pontiled Excelsior Mineral Water, Savannah GA

This is a scarcer version of the pontil era blue Ryan Excelsior, having the first line of embossing horizontal instead of arched, and Union Glass Works is at the bottom on the reverse. The embossing is also crammed lower, well below the shoulder.

Embossed: JOHN RYAN / EXCELSIOR / MINERAL WATER / SAVANNAH, GA // THIS BOTTLE / NEVER SOLD / UNION GLASS WORKS / PHIL.A

Color: deep steely cobalt blue
Height: 7 1/2"
Top: applied blob
Base: iron pontil scar, heavy frosting in deep kickup, no residue

Structural Condition: very good - no chips, cracks, or dings. The inside of the lip might have a slight "ghost" bruise from a cork pry, but it could just be an imperfection from manufacturing- subtle and I might even be imagiging it..

Surface Condition: it has a couple scuffs and spotty wear, plus overall slight dullness. It looks like it was given a light polish clean. The embossing is pretty robust so one could clean it a bit more but I'd leave it be. As is, it's a decent intact example.
