Charleston Soda Water - Clark

Circa 1850-1860 Charleston Taper Top Soda Water - Charles Clark

Here's an oddly colored deep purplish cobalt southern soda with a taper top and lots of crude character (bubbles, glass whittle). It's pretty chunky sized in the body but has a fairly long slender neck which adds to the charm. When Rusty Frye's collection was auctioned in 2015, the opening bid for his example was $250 with an expected hammer price of $500-700, but I don't have the final sales list.

Embossed: CHARLES CLARK / CHARLESTON / S. C. // SODA / WATER

Color: deep purple-lavender hued cobalt blue
Height: 7 1/2"
Top: applied taper
Base: iron pontiled with heavy frosting in a very deep push-up. Not much residue but the pontil scar is very robust

Structural Condition: perfect structurally - no damage of any sort. There is an odd skin of extra glass sticking to the inside of the neck from drips or sags during manufacturing. Adds to the crudity.

Surface Condition: this may have been lightly polish cleaned but it retains some interior stain patches, dullness, and spotty surface wear that would surely clean up a bit better if so desired. The embossing is good.

This bottle is on the far left in the following group pic, which shows how the color compares to some other southern sodas.
