1859 JOHN RYAN Porter

1859 Dated JOHN RYAN XX Philadelphia Porter - Savannah, GEo

Here is one of the scarcer RYAN porter bottles in a squat style (Russ Butler, 1998; No. 10-114). It has a humped shoulder, whereas some of the similar ales are more of a downward sloped shoulder. It's very crude with lots of bubbles and imperfections in the glass. In his 1998 guide (>25 years ago), Russ suggested the value at $325-425. It's priced down because of some wear and rawness such as one small bubble that is open at the surface.

Embossed: JOHN RYAN / SAVANNAH / GEO. / 1859 // XX / PHILADELPHIA / PORTER

Color: medium cobalt blue
Height: 6 5/8"
Top: applied double taper
Base: smooth but deeply indented and just missed pontil

Structural Condition: the good news is that there are no chips, cracks, hairlines or sizeable bruises. The collar is smooth, no roughness. The only structural issue is a 1/4" bubble below the A in Savannah that has a 1/8" opening and opaqueness.

Surface Condition: The bad news is that this is a raw, uncleaned bottle that has some stain and overall moderate wear. The lip has a <1/8 sliver that you need to hunt for. There is some high point wear, the worst of which are a couple nips off the D and E in Philadelphia. This would be a good tumble polish candidate, but be aware that the embossing is a bit light toward the bottom. Decent as is in its natural state.

This bottle is on the far left in the following pics, which show how the color compares to some other southern sodas.
