Circa 1860's Hilton Head, SC Blob Soda - S. C. DENNIS & Co

Here's a really tough southern soda with an especially long neck and a crude applied blob top. There are long stretch marks in the neck and some wavy glass whittle. Smooth-based, circa 1860-1865. According to David Kyle Rakes "Early Sodas of the Carolinas" (2023), this was the only soda bottle made by Samuel C. Dennis. He was mainly a dry goods merchant located at Sutler's Row on Hilton Head Island during the Civil War. This is a really tough bottle that is rarely offered for sale. The only record I could find was the 2015 auction of Rusty Frye's collection where this bottle was offered with an estimated range of $700-1000..

Embossed: S. C. DENNIS & Co / HILTON HEAD / S. C.

Height: 8"
Color: light teal green

Condition: Displays nicely with no visible issues on the shelf. The only structural issue is under the bottom along the heel where there is a hard-to-spot bruise and radiating hairline that is about 1" long. This is pretty minor since it takes bright light to see it, and it's stable. I tried my best to catch it in the 2nd pic below using very strong light.

Otherwise, the bottle is pretty clean with just spotty very light haze and some patchy areas of light scuffing. The only other detraction would be somehat light embossing. These are pretty picky issues that are mentioned for complete accuracy.

Reference Number: PL19

Price: Sold

This bottle is to the far right in this group pic, showing the color shade compared to some other southern sodas being offered.
